A place to spew the innards of my brain after a long night of thinking.
The
Southeastern Louisiana Visual Arts Department Student Show opens tomorrow night, Thursday, February 28th. It is in the
Southeastern La. Univ. Contemporary Art Gallery in Hammond, La.
I have several digital print-ups and some charcoal drawings in this exhibit.
This is a very imporat art exhibition for Southeastern and for myself. The National Association of Art and Design will visit this exhibit. These folks have a hand in Southerastern's prospective BFA degree with respect to the fact that they see the quality work Southeastern's students produce...which in turn, also says something about our quality of instruction.
Now, Southeastern isn't SCAD or the Art Instituite of Chicago
[*cough*--yet], but our instructors are some of the best teachers I've come across (in my
s e v e n y e a r s of school). They care in a compassionate way, not in a how-dare-you-enter-art-school way. I did my hair different today--and they noticed! Now, as trivial as this sounds, hear me out: they knew I was the same student with different hair, not a different student with a strangely familiar face. It's--dare I say it?--a family.
This exhibition is important to me also. These professors, instructors, and professional artists considered me and my work worthy of hanging in a gallery. And not just once--four times. Not only will Southeastern see this stuff, but a team of NASAD judges--who will decide whether Southeastern is producing BFA-worthy work
[we are]. It is an honor to have those over me select my work.
Being in art school is a lot like having a Ford. Somedays, you love it and wondered how you lived your life without it, other days, you wonder how the hell you got in it. This duality of art school not only makes great artists, but opens up avenues for reinforcement.

Three of the five DJ 1-11 album covers I submitted have made it into Southeastern's Visual Art Exhibition!
The three album covers are located in the Sims Memorial Library Gallery on the first floor of Southeastern Louisiana University's academic library. If you're in Hammond, pop on by and take a peek. If you never go to Hammond...shame on you. :)
And then visit http://www.dj1-11.com and click on the "Music" link to see album art. I designed all but 2 of them.
Look for me in an upcoming issue of InRegister Magazine!
I modeled local boutique swimsuits, clothing, shoes and accessories with a 1920's flair. Don't forget to look for the two other beauties in the issue: Kristy and Harriett. Talk about a couple of bombshells! Hopefully my knowledge of the body and photography helped me on the other side of the camera lens. As many photographers can attest, they usually like to be on one side of the camera--and it
ain't the lens side.
Stores around Baton Rouge carry the magazine, including but not limited to: Albertson's on Bluebonnet, Barnes & Noble in Citiplace, CC's Coffee Houses, Rodrigue's Salon, and Rite Aid, just to name a few.
Keep your fingers crossed! I've entered two art competitions in the last week; hopefully I will get accepted by one or both of them.
Southeastern Louisiana University is getting ready for the Visual Arts Society Art Show. Members of the Visual Art Society had to submit their artwork on Friday, Feb. 1. I submitted a series of 5 CD covers I've completed for
DJ 1-11.com. I hope they don't count off for mounting ability, because that's really a weakness for me: cutting, adhering, and mounting my artwork on mat board. After seeing some of the work created by my professors, I feel like a first grader submitting "art" to be hung on the fridge. :)
The other competition, through a national publication, called for submissions to their annual photography book. I submitted a series of 4 photographs which speak to women's struggles with body image. That entry fee put a small hole in my checking account, but if I don't win I'll pretend it was a donation toward feeding starving artists somewhere in California.
We'll see how it all goes...
