Killian, La

I love the river; I love being on the water. I stayed at our camp in Killian, La and was utterly inspired. I did some night (and early morning) photography...

Talk about beautiful. The gentle drift of the meandering bayou is so subtle, and so calm, you'd swear the water isn't moving at all. It's so peaceful, but you realize the "calm" and the "still" of the bayou is very much alive and active. I say it's quiet there, but the sound of the frogs and crickets in the dead of night is deafening. The continuous chirps and croaks swallow the sound of the highway...and my former life in the city.

Being here leaves me torn...I want to high-tail it out of Louisiana so bad I can taste it. But when I come here, a part of me wonders how I could ever leave. My heart lives here.

Bayou Lacassine

New Pictures!

I came back from Bayou Lacassine with a new archive of photos. Some of the new photos can be seen in the Places and Things slide shows. I've also changed the progression of all the slide shows; now the images have a cleaner display.

Enjoy!

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"What inspires me most is connectivity: connecting with other humans, and in turn, having humans connect with their environments. I want people to see the beauty in everything, but I also want people to see everything for what it is. I want to expose injustices, taboos, and hardships…but I want to expose the beauty that precipitates or emerges from the struggles. I want to connect on a spiritual level with nature, on a religious nature with God, on an emotional level with people, and on a technical level with objects.

Sources of inspiration vary from day to day, and hour to hour. My childhood inspires me; I long to return to the beauty of living on the bayou and the smell of burning leaves in autumn. Life inspires me. I want people to see Earth’s fragility as humans consume and dominate it. The perseverance of nature inspires me: no matter how much man thinks he controls his environment, he is really at the mercy of it. I want to empower women, and let them know that estrogen is neither a handicap nor an excuse.

Dorthea Lange influences me. The way she captured the Dust Bowl is gripping—and I want to be able to photograph like that. Joseph Cornell influences me. It intrigues me the way he speaks to others in terms of time."

Two new night shot photos on the "Places" slideshow!
