A place to spew the innards of my brain after a long night of thinking.
Well, in my mind anyway. At first, I was pretty intimidated by the 3-D design class, but now...I have learned I don't always have to be a messy artist.
So this is what I've been up to...
I've been in the darkroom A LOT.
I've been playing with power tools A LOT.
I think I'll give the photography talk a break and talk about the spoils of 3-D design.
My instructor asked of other works, "Is this 'John & Lacey Good'...?" (John is a skilled student in the class) Yay! Am I a standard?! Who cares--I know I'm certainly less intimidated than I was before class projects began. I prefer to say I am "challenged" by this class now, rather than "intimidated."
We've made little boxes out of paper...my shape was a 7-sided diamond-like box. We had to make 25 of them and then glue them into symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes. My asymmetrical shape was formed by putting 12 boxes into a paper bag, shaking it, dumping it onto the floor and gluing them as they landed.

My symmetrical shape was far less interesting. Let's just say it resembled a three-legged peacock (
a la NBC).
So then the dang thing had to be cast in concrete and plaster (from a mold). From there, the concrete & plaster shapes had to be transitionally carved into a different shape. I chose to transition from a diamond to... (drumroll) ...an egg!

I'm glad I can say that I am doing just fine planning a wedding, being a quasi-housewife, and a student commuter.
I couldn't do it without help, though. :)

Weeks into Spring 07: 8
Weeks until Summer 07: 8
New miles on the Maxima: 3600.
Minutes spent in the car per week: 650
I'm halfway through the semester now, and I have learned a few things.
1. My bladder clearly objects to the 80-minute, two-way commute to and from Hammond.
2. Parking tickets are NOT, I repeat: NOT a method used only by LSU to poke fun at new students.
3. Classes get a heck of a lot more interesting when a scholarship isn't paying for them.
4. Some people at Southeastern just don't know how good they have it as an SLU Lion.
5. Distance traveled to school is not proportional to sympathy received from cat.
It's been a stink of a week. I drove to Hammond (for the 6th time in 7 days) to put in extra hours at the Photo Lab. Photo lab hours quietly changed, making the lab closed on Sunday.
I cussed.
I left.
I lost my Art History notes. I panicked. I basically e-mailed the National Guard Search & Rescue because I needed some serious help finding these babies...besides, my test is Monday (didn't I just take one?). Found notes an hour later...neatly tucked away in textbook.
Note to self: Light bulb on FIRST, then attempt to think.
Lost my negative sleeves for my Photography class. When attempting to find them, I made the discovery that they had been, in fact, stolen.
People. Will. Steal. Anything.
In my 3D Design class, we are casting molds of 5-sided figures which were originally assembled with paper....Assembled 26 times with paper.
Assembling said 3D object in paper 26 times does not qualify one as capable of creating identical shape with concrete. Nor does assembling 26 little paper boxes make it easier to create one of wood or plaster, either. Big hands are also not a plus.
Despite all these little run-ins with reality, I am not one bit discouraged. I love my classes, I love my job, and I love my Chad. I'm endlessly fascinated by what I'm learning, and I always have new things to learn. Things aren't always peachy, but that's okay, because I don't always like peaches. :)
